please keep this in mind
“Gov. Brown’s plan would give control over a huge chunk of Northern California’s water supply to a handful of billionaire Central Valley plantation owners and Southern California real estate developers, allowing them to use even more of the state’s over-tapped water supply, a shared public resource, as a private commodity that they can then turn around and sell on the open market for huge easy profits.”
“Canal opponents believe the construction of the canal, designed to divert massive quantities of badly needed fresh water out of the Delta, would likely result in the extinction of Central Valley steelhead, Sacramento River chinook salmon, Delta smelt, longfin smelt, green sturgeon and other imperiled fish species. “ http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/08/19/18688169.php
I haven’t vetted this, but I’m reblogging for my research stack and to share this quick anecdote.
I was in college when Jerry Brown was challenging Bill Clinton for the Dem nomination. He stopped by my California History class after a campaign rally and talked to us for two hours.
Out topic that night, as planned sans Brown, was the history of water rights in the state.
Real thrilling, I know.
But damn if that man didn’t come in and talk to us about water for two hours. In California water is power. Just remember that.
